Continue Writing with AI

Category: AI Assisted Writing

Writing Crucible provides two AI drafting tools inside the manuscript editor to help you move forward when writing:

  • Continue Writing – generates the next portion of text based on your current draft.

  • Continue Writing with Guidance – lets you provide specific instructions (tone, POV, constraints, beats) before generating text.

These tools are designed to assist your writing process. They never overwrite your work without approval and do not auto-write your book.

How to Access Continue Writing

AI drafting tools are accessed directly from the manuscript editor using the slash command.

  1. Place your cursor where you want the draft to continue.

  2. Type / in the editor to open the AI command menu.

  3. Choose:

    • Continue Writing, or

    • Continue Writing with Guidance

If AI tools are not available on your current plan, the options will appear disabled with an upgrade message.

Using “Continue Writing”

  1. Place your cursor at the point you want to continue.

  2. Type / and select Continue Writing.

  3. The AI generates a continuation draft based on:

    • Your existing manuscript text

    • Chapter context

    • Relevant notes and worldbuilding (when applicable)

No guidance is required — the AI continues naturally from your existing text.

Using “Continue Writing with Guidance”

Use this option when you want more control over the output.

  1. Type / and select Continue Writing with Guidance.

  2. In the guidance dialog:

    • Select a Scene (if your chapter has scenes)

    • Enter Guidance (tone, POV, constraints, beats, etc.)

    • Choose a Length (Short / Scene / Extended)

    • Optionally enable Include previous context

  3. Click Generate.

Draft Preview & Acceptance

When AI text is generated:

  • The draft is inserted directly into the manuscript

  • It is visually formatted differently from your existing text

  • This makes it easy to review before committing

You’ll see a draft action bar with three options:

  • Accept – keeps the generated text and applies normal formatting

  • Reject – removes the generated text completely

  • Redo – regenerates the draft using the same settings

Nothing becomes permanent until you click Accept.

Customizing AI Prompts (Optional)

Advanced users can customize how these tools behave.

  1. Go to Settings → AI Prompts

  2. Choose:

    • Continue Writing, or

    • Continue Writing with Guidance

  3. Enable Use my custom prompt

  4. Edit and save your prompt

Your custom prompts apply to future generations.

Tips for Better Results

  • End your last paragraph with a clear direction before using Continue Writing.

  • Use Guidance when you need tighter control over voice or pacing.

  • Be intentional with cursor placement — the AI continues from that exact point.

  • Always review generated text before accepting.
