Closing Your Account

Category: Account & Security

You can close your Writing Crucible account yourself at any time. Here's what happens when you do, how to keep a copy of your work first, and how long you have to change your mind.

If you only want to stop paying, you don't need to close your account. Cancel your plan instead and keep your writing on the Free plan. See Free Trial, Upgrading and Cancelling.

Download your data first

  1. Go to Settings → Account.

  2. Under Download Your Data, click Download Data.

You'll get a file with your profile, series, books, chapters, worldbuilding, and the feedback you've given. It's a data file (JSON), not a formatted manuscript, so export any manuscript you want to read or share before you close the account.

The Account tab in Settings, with Download Data and Delete Account

Closing your account

  1. Go to Settings → Account.

  2. In the Danger Zone, click Delete Account.

  3. When asked Are you sure?, click Yes, Delete. Click Cancel if you've changed your mind.

You're signed out and taken to the home page.

What happens when you close it

  • You can't sign in any more. Your account is closed straight away.

  • Your subscription or trial is cancelled immediately, not at the end of the billing period, so you won't be charged again.

  • Sharing stops. Beta readers and collaborators lose access to your books, and any book listed for beta readers is taken down.

  • Feedback you've given other authors stays with them, but it shows as Deleted user instead of your name.

  • You'll get an email confirming the account has been closed.

Changing your mind: 30 days

You can't reopen the account yourself, but we keep your writing for 30 days after you close it, as the Danger Zone explains. If you change your mind, or you didn't close it yourself, email wc-support@writingcrucible.com within those 30 days. We can restore your account and everything you'd written, put your beta readers and collaborators back, and put your name back on the feedback you'd given other authors.

After 30 days, your writing is permanently removed and can't be recovered.

Accounts that never finish setting up

If you create an account but don't finish setting it up within 30 days, the account is deleted. We send reminders a day and a week after you sign up, and a final warning at three weeks. The same 30-day window applies afterwards: email support if it was a mistake and we can restore it.
